Take a look at how work is going at Rhyl's Pavilion Theatre
Rhyl’s new-look Pavilion Theatre will boast a “high end” restaurant overlooking the seafront and offer show and dining packages once refurbishment work is finished in early autumn.
Today, the Daily Post was invited for an exclusive look at how work is progressing at the East Parade site since the adjoining Sun Centre was demolished.
One facade is almost complete and work is continuing on the rest of the frontage.
The box office and lobby areas have undergone a make over with new flooring, furniture and downstairs bar.
Upstairs will house a large restaurant and bar area with spectacular sea views.
Denbighshire Council say they will run the eatery and are about to launch a recruitment campaign advertising 20 new catering jobs.
There will also be a dance floor for private functions.
The area outside where the Sun Centre once stood will be landscaped for the time being.
The former Sun Centre car park has already been earmarked for a new Travelodge, Marstons family pub/restaurant and a third commercial unit.
Jamie Groves, Denbighshire Council’s head of facilities said: “This development is in the ‘hospitality zone,’ one of many zones we’re trying to develop along the promenade.
“We’ve finished the outdoor car parks and now we’re cladding and painting the facility.
“We’ve got work underway on a new restaurant, bar and kitchen.
“It’s going to be a really nice food and beverage offer in the theatre to compliment the shows that we already have, and we’re looking to complete this by early autumn.”
He added: “The theatre here has always had an affinity with many people, it provides good family shows, but the secondary offer hasn’t been the standard it needed to be so we’re bringing the theatre back up to the 21st century.
13 reasons Rhyl is actually awesome
“We’re going to be providing a nice new dining and theatre experience but also a new restaurant offer for Rhyl, which I think is important as well.
“We’ll have a new offer here that’s open, regardless of the theatre having a show and we’re adding to the evening economy in Rhyl.
“The views from the newly-glazed windows looking out to sea will be pretty spectacular.
“I don’t think there’s going to be anything that could rival the views or the experience that you’ll have in this new restaurant and bar that we’re creating upstairs.”
Work forms part of a wider regeneration plan for the town which includes a £15m water park set to open in 2019.
Further down the prom at West Parade, construction has also started on a new 70-bedroom Premier Inn hotel and Brewers Fayre restaurant with 71 parking spaces at the former Honey Club site.
The Children’s Village car park will also be renovated to accommodate the new attractions and work is also ongoing on turning the Sky Tower into a decorative light beacon with a collage of images of Rhyl around the hoardings at its base.
