When you travel, you already know, to some extent, what you need to bring. When you’re headed to countries with cold weather, you pack your jacket and thermal undergarments. When you’re jetting off to regions with sun-kissed beaches, you bring your best bikinis or swimming trunks. Whatever else you need to bring will be determined by the length of time you have to spend in another location and your reasons for travelling to that location. But there are travel necessities that you should never forget: passport, ticket, identification cards, and a passport cover.

Having a holder for your passport isn’t a luxury nor should it be limited to travellers with frequent flier miles. It’s an accessory meant to prevent you from losing your passport, one of the most important travelling documents you carry around. Sometimes, during peak travelling season like the holidays, you’ll find yourself in a rush to line up for security checks or baggage check-in and you tend to forget where you stuffed your passport. So you begin to fumble for it in your bag, backpack, or pockets. A holder, especially one with a lanyard that you can wear around your neck, will keep you from losing your passport.

Some of the more clever travellers will store their travel documents in a zip-up waistbag making retrieval less stressful during a mad dash at the airport. Unfortunately, storing your passport without protection in a tiny bag with other items can result in damages: the coat of arms could be rubbed off or the entire passport could be crumpled. Using, for instance, a customized cover for passport can prevent such damages, which can mean being interrogated by immigration. With security measures being stringent these days, any damage to your passport might be misconstrued as an attempt at forgery.

A more recent advantage to using a cover or wallet for your passport is the introduction of radio frequency identification or RFID technology. A majority of passports these days come with RFID that stores identifying data printed on the front page of a passport, including a biometric identifier, which is used to confirm your identification when you cross international borders. While the technology makes security checks easier, it has spawned some very enterprising and technologically equipped people who can steal identities with an RFID reader. With your passport safely tucked into a holder with RFID-blocking feature, you’ll be safe in the knowledge that your identity will remain secure wherever you travel.
