Controversial Wrexham poultry shed plans for nearly 36,000 birds to be debated
Two controversial proposals for poultry developments in Wrexham to house thousands of birds will come before councillors next week.
On Monday (April 24) Wrexham council’s planning committee will meet for the last time before the local elections on May 4, to vote on which applications will get passed.
They will have to decide on two separate proposals in Llay and Legacy to house up to nearly 36,000 additional birds in total.
But council bosses are recommending they are given the go-ahead despite concerns over animal welfare noise, pollution, smell and the impact on the environment and traffic.
Aviagen Turkeys Ltd have submitted controversial for six turkey rearing sheds off Rackery Lane, Llay, with feed silos and a new access road.
If given the go-ahead it would house up to 20,000 birds.
But neighbours are unhappy with the proposals with one objector claiming: “The method of poultry rearing proposed is disgraceful and is not considered to be a compassionate way of rearing livestock.”
However another respondent was in support saying the development would create much-needed jobs.
Wrexham council’s head of planning and the environment, Lawrence Isted, said: “I am satisfied that the applicant has provided a reasoned and robust justification for proposing this isolated agricultural building given their specialised processes and locational needs.”
In a separate application Talwrn Farm at Talwrn Road, Legacy, has applied to build another barn housing 15,700 birds and two feed silos for egg production.
If given the go-ahead it would increase the overall number of birds on the site to 31,400 birds.
But neighbours are concerned by noise, smell and the environmental impact.
However Mr Isted, said: “I am satisfied that the nature of the additional built development associated with the accepted use of the site for the housing of barn laying chickens is acceptable.”
Other items on Monday’s agenda include the erection of five houses at Lower Honkley Farm, Stringers Lane, Burton, which is recommended for refusals.
But the building of two new houses on Maes Mawr Road, Garth, Trevor, has been recommended for the go-ahead.
