Fundraisers in memory of 'gentle giant' Anglesey footballer Eskinumo Ayabowei

Two fundraisers will take place in memory of a ‘gentle giant’ footballer who died following an incident outside a Gwynedd nightclub.

Father of two, Eskinumo Ayabowei, 27 was found unconscious outside Peep in Bangor following reports of an assault in the early hours of April 1. He died in hospital the following day.

Kieren Terence Roberts, 26, of Penrhyn Avenue, Maesgeirchen, near Bangor, has appeared in court accused of his murder.

Following an outpouring of support from his home community on Anglesey, more than £10,000 has already been raised in his memory, to be donated to his partner and two daughters.

Known as Henry Esin to loved ones, former clubs of his, including Llangefni, Llanfairpwll and Trearddur Bay also donated part of their gate receipts to the fund.

On Saturday, May 27, former teammates and fellow students have organised a memorial match to be played at Bangor City’s Nantporth Stadium featuring the current Bangor University Football Club playing against an ‘Old Boys Classic XI.’ Kick off is at 2pm.

Another of Henry’s former clubs is planning a five-a-side tournament on May 28, with hopes this could develop into an annual memorial event.

Mathew Thomas, chairman of Gaerwen FC, who is organising the day alongside Peter Twigg and Steve Jones, said: “No one has a bad word to say about Henry, or Romeo as everyone knew him as.

“He was a gentle giant in every way and always had a beaming smile when you saw him.

“Although we’re only thinking about this year’s tournament for now, I can’t see why we couldn’t turn it into an annual thing.”

The tournament, on Sunday, May 28, at Gaerwen FC, will feature squads of seven players, five of which will be on the pitch at one time.

There will also be bouncy castles, face-painting, children’s entertainment corner, a bar and live music.

Mathew added: “At the moment we’re looking for entries as well as anyone, be they businesses or individuals, who can help with raffle or auction items or any other way they can. It’s for a good cause and would be hugely appreciated.”

Following his tragic death, Henry’s family released a tribute to the keen Arsenal supporter, saying: “He always put his family first, sometimes to the detriment of his own interests.

“As can be seen by the many tributes afforded to Henry, he was loved and respected by all who knew him.

“Although we are all devastated to lose Henry at such a young age, and that our lives will never be the same, we as a family will not allow this senseless act to destroy the future of his beloved girls.

“Whilst a Dad’s love may never be completely replaced, we will do all in our power to give our time, effort and emotions to ensure the best possible future for his girls under the circumstances.

Anyone who can help out or who wishes to enter a team for the tournament, should contact Mathew on 07452 831411.
