'He’s fighting' says uncle of Gwynedd teenager battling for life after horror crash
A teenage cyclist continues to fight for life after he crashed into a wall near Pwllheli two weeks ago.
Connor Jones, 17, suffered serious head injuries in the smash close to his home in Mynytho near Abersoch on April 26.
The engineering student at Coleg Meirion Dwyfor in Dolgellau, was peddling along an unclassified road between Mynytho and Abersoch when the accident happened near the Rhandir Caravan Park.
Paramedics and a doctor treated him at the scene before he was airlifted by the Wales Air Ambulance to the specialist trauma unit at the Royal Stoke University Hospital.
A hospital spokesman said Connor’s condition remains “critical”.
The youngster’s mother Anne and other members of family are at his bedside.
His uncle, Paul Tyrrell, told the Daily Post: “It’s not all been good news during the past few days.
“He’s still in a critical condition but he’s fighting and giving it a good go.
“He has shown some signs of improvement but then seems to slip back a little.
“Our emotions have been unbelievable the past week or so.
“First of all elation as he appears to be improving and then the downside when he suffers a setback.”
Paul said Connor was taken off the ventilator and was breathing on his own for a time.
He added the swelling on his nephew’s brain has also subsided.
“He’s back on the machine now and is a bit more stable. But then he declines again and then comes back up, it’s a real rollercoaster ride and we’re all still praying he pulls through and gets to leave that hospital.
“It helps that he’s a fit young lad,” he said.
Paul said family and friends have rallied round and are supporting Connor and his mother.
“Our family are taking it in turns to sit with Anne at the hospital giving her support. And we’ve had a cracking response from people in the Stoke area, people my brother knows in the area, who are offering us accommodation and the like,” he said.
North Wales Police are investigating the incident and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
