Historic Colwyn Bay mansion estate is up for sale

The former mansion estate of Lord Colwyn that later housed two convalescent homes has been put up for sale.

Queen’s Lodge mansion was built in Colwyn Bay at end of the 1800s for a wealthy industrialist and later bought by Frederick Henry Smith, the 1st Baron Colwyn.

It was sold in 1946 to the Merseyside Hospitals Council, and the house became known as the John Braddock Convalescent Home while the Mary Bamber Convalescent Centre was built in the grounds in the 1960s.

The owners Medicash closed both homes in 2008.

Now Legat Owen has been instructed to sell the renowned former Lord Colwyn’s Estate as a unique development opportunity.

The 13.7-acre site off Queens Avenue is situated in an elevated position overlooking Colwyn Bay.

A spokesman said: “Consisting of two separate buildings including the original dwelling once occupied by Lord Colwyn and a more recently developed property, the land offers mature woodland, with walled and landscaped gardens and a pond.

“Legat Owen has advised on several potential uses for the site subject to planning, with conditional and unconditional offers invited for the freehold sale with full vacant possession.”

Ben Lamont, surveyor at Legat Owen, the sole commercial agent for the site, added: “The sale of this estate provides a rare opportunity to acquire a stunning premier asset in one of North Wales’ most popular destinations.

“The site has potential to reap maximum reward for the area, considering the extensive regeneration and redevelopment of the bay’s iconic seafront and amenities that is attracting further inward interest.

“With existing top schools, the Wales Art Council, retail and leisure outlets and the seaside location itself, there is an established hub of community activity to walk straight into.

“Colwyn Bay is easily accessible from the rest of North Wales and nationally, with excellent rail and motorway networks, making this historical estate a genuine prospect for a hugely successful venture. We look forward to working with clients to discuss the endless opportunities.”

A price has not been given and any visit is by prior appointment only.
