Homes damaged after burst pipe in Llandudno Junction sends 100ft jet of water in air
Residents have been left counting the cost after a damaged water hydrant launched a 100ft jet of water into the air outside their homes.
Around 10 properties were damaged during yesterday’s incident in Marl Drive, Llandudno Junction , which left homeowners without water for more than nine hours .
Shocked residents today told the Daily Post about the damage caused to their homes and belongings, with one saying her irreplaceable wedding mementos had been destroyed.
Corwena Hull’s house was flooded when water poured down the chimney. Her garden was also water-logged.
She said: “Water came through the chimney and so our lounge was flooded, and now we’ll need a new fire and redecorating.
“The roof has to be checked and the guttering replaced as it was bowing with all the pressure of the water.
“I really thought our bay windows were going to cave in with all the pressure of the water.
“There’s also damage to our bedroom ceiling.
“But it could have been a lot worse if a neighbour hadn’t lifted a culvert cover up which drained a lot of the water.”
Nia Colvill, who was married a year ago, says she’s lost precious items which were irreplaceable.
The care worker said: “I’ve lost all my wedding cards which were being stored in the shed outside and wedding gifts.
“Our kitchen was flooded and a wall collapsed – it’s devastating.”
She added: “A loss adjuster came on behalf of Welsh Water and I just hope they’ll keep to their word and replace like for like.”
Eye-witness Karen Jones, a careworker who lives on Marl Lane, said she heard a loud bang when the hydrant burst.
She said: “At first I thought it was a fire as the water looked like steam.
“I’m just pleased no one was killed.”
Cllr Mike Priestley, who was praised for helping residents during the incident, is now calling for an inquiry.
“We were asking for the water to be switched off but it didn’t happen for hours, I’d like to know why and who made the final decision to shut the water down?”
Welsh Water has promised a full investigation.
A spokeswoman said: “We are of course very sorry this happened however we have been working closely with these customers to ensure any outstanding issues are resolved as soon as possible and that they are not at any financial loss.
“Our inspectors worked until the early hours to ensure water supplies were restored to all customers in the area.”
