'Kind and considerate' cyclists comforted dying rider in charity cycle

Cyclists taking part in a charity ride have been praised by organisers for trying to help a fellow participant who fell ill and died.

The 44-year-old man was raising money for Douglas Macmillan Hospice when he collapsed on the A5 near Chirk at 10.45am yesterday.

He was taking part in the 110-mile Dougie Mac bike ride from Trent Vale to Llangollen and back, when tragedy struck.

It is believed he came from Staffordshire.

David Webster, the charity’s chief executive, said: “I have been made aware that other participants in the event stopped and tried to help the cyclist whilst waiting for the arrival of the emergency services.

“We thank everyone for their kindness and genuine display of consideration for their fellow event participant, who was not known to them personally.

“We share their sadness and deep regret that nothing could be done to help the cyclist.

“Ultimately though, our thoughts and hearts go out to the family and friends of the cyclist, we extend our deepest condolences on their sad and untimely loss.”

Douglas Macmillan Hospice provides palliative care for adults across North Staffordshire.

Those who took part have taken to social media to discuss how well the event was organised and the robust contingency plans put into action when the man fell ill.

Karen McKenzie, hospice director of income generation praised the staff and volunteers for the exemplary way they carried on with the day and supported all those affected by the situation.

The A5 was closed in both directions causing heavy traffic whilst emergency services dealt with the incident.

Nick Evans, temporary superintendent said: “Members of the public and the emergency services tried their very best to help the cyclist and I am very sad to say that their efforts were not successful.

“Our thoughts are with the gentleman’s family and friends.”

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 101 quoting incident reference number V065161.
