Look what vandals did to Anglesey village football club
Volunteers at an Anglesey footclub attacked by vandals have vowed to carry on.
Earlier this month officials at Llandegfan FC were shocked after yobs smashed windows and broke into the club’s changing rooms and stole paint.
They then daubed paint on the exterior walls and smashed goal posts
Materials worth £500, which had been donated by local builder’s merchants, Huws Gray, and was intended to rebuild the dugouts, were also damaged during the raid.
The blow came as efforts are underway to re-establish a team in the village, following the disbandment of Llandegfan Antelope FC three years ago.
Jordan Love, a former player who is trying to re-start the club, said: “Llandegfan is a big village not to have a team, and it can be an important part of community life.
“We’d been fortunate enough to receive £500 worth of materials to start fixing the dugouts, but this is a big setback.
“Hopefully we can salvage at least sections, but its very disappointing nonetheless.”
Carwyn Jones, who has attended some of the meetings to restart the club, added: “There’s a move here to get the club back on its feet and efforts have been underway to get the ball rolling.
“It’s disheartening this has happened, what’s supposed to be a good thing for Llandegfan and Llansadwrn.
“This won’t stop us though, we still want to see the job through.
“There’s been a club here for years, the very heart of the community.”
Despite the setback, the club is forging ahead with an open day in mid-May, aimed towards getting players, coaches and volunteers on board, targeting a return to the Anglesey League next season.
A senior team’s open day will be held at Ysgol David Hughes, Menai Bridge at 5:30pm on Tuesday, followed by one for the juniors on Saturday May 6 at Ysgol Llandegfan, starting at 11:30am.
Jordan added: “We’re looking for as much help as we can, be it from locals willing to help out or businesses who want to come on board and support us in any way they can.
“Anything would be a massive help.”
There is more information about helping on the club’s Facebook page.
A police spokeswoman said they were made aware of a break in at the club on April 2, but no-one has been arrested.
