Mum's tears of joy as daughter, six, shows 'amazing' improvement after treatment abroad
A six-year-old girl who travelled abroad for pioneering treatment is already showing a dramatic improvement in her development.
Amelia Stanco was born with spina bifiida and hydrocephalus which has left her paralysed from the waist down, and means her bladder and bowels do not work properly.
The Ysgol y Foryd pupil recently went to Poland to undergo the first of five stem cell transplantation injections and her overjoyed parents say she is now able to communicate in full sentences and play by herself for the very first time.
Her mum Sylwia, who works as a carer, said: “She is having a series of injections, and even after just the first one she has reacted very well.
“Straight away we noticed huge amounts of energy, which she still has.
“We have observed some movements in her one leg for the first time and the capacity of her bladder is increasing.”
She added: “But perhaps the most significant change is that her speech has improved so much.
“Before she went to Poland she used to point at things or say a couple of words like “drink, Mama” or “food, Mama” but since the treatment she can now speak in full sentences!
“Also she is now playing by herself for the very first time, and is now playing with her doll’s house which has lain untouched in her room since we bought it for her three years ago.
“I must admit when I heard her talk to her dolly in the doll’s house, saying she was going to bath her, I cried as it was so amazing to hear.”
Amelia, of Kinmel Bay, who is not showing any adverse side effects to the treatment, will return to Poland with her family next month for further treatment.
In February the Daily Post reported how Amelia’s kind hearted-classmates sold their own toys and held a cake sale to help her parents raise funds towards the treatment.
