Technology has come a very long way in a seemingly short amount of time. It was not long ago that we were watching TV on an enormous black cube and flipping our Motorola Moto’s thinking that we were living in the peak time of technology, and how very wrong we were. Technology is slowly but surely becoming a large factor in our day to day lives and we can only expect it to advance even further. Let me introduce you to the future of technology.   Virtual reality This is definitely one that all of you gamers out there have probably already heard of. Virtual reality, often just simply called VR, is a computer generated simulator that allows you to experience a game or scenario as if you were really there, it manipulates your senses of sight and sound to allow you to feel as though the environment around you is real. If you want to run around shooting dinosaurs on the moon, virtual reality could very well make that possible. The Oculus Rift, which you can pick up for around £300-£500, is a head mounted display unit that takes the world of gaming to a whole new level, it allows you to physically control your character, use different weapons and objects and even move in your desired direction. Why use chunky controllers when you can roam around the world of Call of Duty for yourself? As of now, games available for the Oculus Rift include Alien: Isolation, Half-Life and Skyrim! Although primarily used for gaming, virtual reality is capable of being used for so much more. It is said that lecturers at Cambridge and Oxford university want to use the Oculus Rift during lectures or lessons, meaning that students wouldn’t have to physically leave their houses, as they could whack on a headset and be in a lesson from the comfort of their living rooms. Sounds pretty neat, right?

Drones

The idea of drones in the future is both daunting and incredibly intriguing. In terms of warfare and violence, they are horrific, but that’s not the route I am going to take you down today. For those of you who are not aware of what drones are, they are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV’s), controllable aircrafts that almost anybody is able to purchase. Most people use drones for recreational use, almost like an advanced RC helicopter, however, it would be no surprise if soon enough the entire sky above us is filled with these flying lumps of plastic. Amazon, the website of course, not the rainforest, are planning on using drones to deliver orders and purchases right to peoples doorsteps.

Although this seems like an incredible idea, as you wouldn’t have to wait an eternity for your new socks or whatever the hell you are waiting for to arrive, the more you think about it the more it seems unreasonable. It is estimated that Amazon delivers around 306 items every second, now I’m by no means a maths genius, but that is a lot of packages per day! Now imagine if those packages were being delivered by propeller powered helicopters, the sky would be almost blackened by these hovering gadgets, and to me at least, that is not an attractive thought. No need to fear though! The odds of Amazon being allowed to do this are extremely slim, for a number of reasons, but probably the fear of drones smashing into innocent civilians whilst delivering some kids Xbox games closes the case!
