Plans for four new North Wales railway stations take 'significant step forward'
Plans for four new rail stations in North Wales have taken a “significant step” towards being realised says a Wrexham MP.
Ian Lucas MP said plans for Wrexham North and Wrexham South stations would be looked at “in detail” after an announcement by Welsh Government Infrastructure secretary Ken Skates.
Also in the mix is a station at Deeside Industrial Park as part of the Northern Gateway Scheme and one in Llangefni, Anglesey.
Welsh Government took into consideration 47 potential sites for new stations and 12, including the four in North Wales, have been taken forward to the second stage.
“This is very good news indeed, and is a significant step forward for North Wales and for the proposed North Wales Metro.
“For Wrexham, it means proposals for the town to be a transport hub have moved forward again.”
Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami added: “This is great news for Alyn and Deeside as it will be yet another incentive for businesses to come to the area.
“The local economy has been growing and growing in recent years and it is imperative that the capability of the infrastructure grows with it.”
Last month Welsh Government economy and infrastructure secretary Ken Skates today launched ‘Moving North Wales Forward – Our Vision for North Wales and the North East Wales Metro’ outlining proposals or an integrated transport system in the region.
He said improving the area’s transport links was a Welsh Government priority, with nearly £600m committed to fund schemes and work underway to secure an additional £41m of EU funding.
“This is a major step forward in building the North East Wales Metro and offers a game changing boost to cross-border transport infrastructure,” said Mr Skates.
The next stage will look in more detail at the strength of the financial and economic case for each railway station before budgets are allocated.
