Saab estate converted into 'tank' for 1,500 mile trek to Benidorm

An estate car has been transformed into “a tank” in which four men will make the 1,472-mile journey from North Wales to Benidorm.

With a fully opening turret made from an old roof box and a length of drainpipe for a cannon, John McGowan from Prestatyn and Tony Adams from Henllan will form part of Team Tanking it as part of the Benidorm or Bust charity banger rally, which will see them pass through three countries in five days.

Setting off from Denbigh town centre on June 6, the main event begins the following day in Dover.

The team will then board the ferry to France to start their adventure which will involve four days of driving from France to Spain before their arrival in Benidorm.

There, the vehicle will be sold off with all proceeds donated to charity.

John and Tony “lovingly converted” a Saab estate into a “tank” to raise money for St Kentigern’s Hospice, North Clwyd Animal Rescue Centre and MacMillan Cancer Support.

Their sponsor, Denbigh Army Surplus have supplied the team with Army themed uniforms for the epic journey.

John said: “The driving of the vehicle will be split between the four of us equally on the way down, however upon arrival in Benidorm, we will say a fond farewell to our beloved ‘tank’ as it will either be sold to the highest bidder in a charity auction or sold for scrap.

“We will then fly home under our own coin.”

He added: “The tank will be travelling throughout North Wales and the North West of England over the next few weeks to promote and publicise the event more and to gain much needed sponsorship and donations for the charities involved.

“We will also be attending the Prestatyn Classic Car Show on May Bank Holiday Monday to show off the vehicle as well as a send-off day on June 3 at Sunny’s Bar in Towyn.

“Please show us your support.”
