What you say about Labour wanting four new bank holidays

Daily Post readers are divided over the plan for four new bank holidays if Labour are elected in June’s General Election .

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said a Labour government would seek to create four new UK-wide bank holidays on the patron saint’s day of each of the home nations.

Mr Corbyn said the move would bring together England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, while giving workers a well-deserved break.

Here’s what you have to say on the Daily Post Facebook page :

‘St David’s day should be a Bank Holiday already’

Gareth Edwards said: “Brilliant idea. Puts us in line with most other European countries. Our working hours are already higher than others but our productivity is lower.

“Also Bank Holidays boost the economy, particularly tourist and leisure industries so we in North Wales should welcome this proposal.”

Ian Stuart Maloy agreed: “Da iawn Jeremy Corbyn! Germany, especially in places like Bavaria, have more public holidays, and it doesn’t affect productivity.”

Mike Armstrong added: “Yes we have wanted this for years.”

Thomas Banwell wrote: “St David’s day should be a Bank Holiday already!”

Nigel Hughes added: “But it won’t increase your holiday entitlement, if anything it decreases it, as you wouldn’t get the choice of when you want your hols.”

Julie Kesterton wrote: “Ridiculous. Too many days close together at times when the weather is unpredictable would just lead to families being stuck at home in front of the tv.”

Jimmy Jones said: “Yes, we’re way behind other countries. People who will cry it’ll cost too much in productivity need to be pointed towards Germany who have seven Bank Holidays more than us and are way ahead in productivity.”

‘Pathetic attempt to gain votes’

Sheila Baker wrote: “Yes I think they are a great idea. A rested workforce is a productive and happy workforce.”

Emily Partridge said: “Bank holidays mean nothing to shop workers, hospital staff, the emergency services and many more. Pathetic attempt to gain votes not one pledge on jobs, schools or the NHS.

“Next Comrade Corbyn will be promising ‘sunshine on your birthday’ and a ‘winning lottery ticket’ for everyone on 9th June.”

Dawn Jones agreed: “More time with family with those that are lucky enough to benefit can only be good.”

Emma Davies said: “We have the lowest number of public holidays in Europe so I think this is an excellent idea!”

Dylan Drake wrote: “I think he should fight Brexit instead of this nonsense.”

Margaret Morgan simply said: “He’d do anything for a vote.”

Del Williams added: “And who’s going to pay for these additional holidays? Living in cloud cookoo land.”

Geoff Hughes said: “Does he not realise that many of his voters are self employed and receive no payment for bank holidays taken off. They cannot work if the industry they serve are closed because of this idea.”

Juliet Robinson wrote: “It’s not a brill idea, even I can understand that these will cost money and who will pay for them? Either way our employer will be penalised and have to pay for us to stay at home or double time if people have to work.”
